Computer Peripheral
A peripheral is defined as something that adds additional function. A computer peripheral, going by the same definition, is a device that adds additional function to a computer. It is needed only when a specific job is to be done and does not contribute significantly toward the main operations of the computer. For example, the output may be needed in a form different than the standard, say a printout instead of a screen display. In this case, a printer needs to be connected and configured to work with the computer so that the output can be printed. This makes the printer a peripheral. Looking for a printer that offers various features requires some understanding of the terms used in the printer specifications. Some of these include, the type of ink used (toner-based/dye-based/etc), the type of interface (USB/parallel port/etc), printing speed, type of paper feed, etc. Once the user understands these, they will be able to make a match of their needs with the printer’’s specifications. After a match is achieved, usually after comparing a few different brands of printers, the user is ready to buy the printer! The final step after getting the printer is making it work with the printer. This usually involves properly interfacing the printer with the computer and priming it before daily use.
